The Utiliverse Bandwidth Calculator estimates transfer time, transferable file size, or required bandwidth. It uses the basic relationship between data size, transfer speed, and time, converting everything internally to bits and bits per second so different units can be compared consistently.
Network speeds are usually advertised in bits per second while files are usually measured in bytes. Since one byte contains eight bits, a 100 Mbps connection has a theoretical maximum of about 12.5 MB per second before overhead.

Calculate transfer time

Calculate required bandwidth

Understand Mbps and MB/s
Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. Because eight bits equal one byte, 800 Mbps is 100 MB/s in a theoretical best case.
Understand GB and GiB
GB uses decimal units based on powers of 1,000. GiB uses binary units based on powers of 1,024. Choosing the unit that matches the number shown by your operating system or application improves accuracy.
Use the efficiency setting
Real throughput is often lower than the advertised line rate because of protocol overhead, congestion, retransmissions, Wi-Fi quality, storage limits, VPN encryption, and server-side bottlenecks. Eighty percent is a useful general planning estimate, while lower values can model less favorable conditions.
