How this internet speed test works
A browser speed test estimates how quickly data can move between your device and an external measurement endpoint. Download speed measures data arriving at your browser, while upload speed measures data being transmitted from your browser. Ping measures round-trip delay, and jitter describes the variation between latency samples.
This version is designed to avoid the single-endpoint failure you experienced. It first attempts to load a list of HTTPS-capable public speed-test servers, displays multiple locations, and lets you choose one manually. If your browser grants location permission, the page can compare the listed server coordinates with your approximate device position and rank the available choices by geographic distance. The location is used in the browser to choose a server; the page does not send the raw coordinates to Utiliverse.
Why a nearby server can matter
Internet performance is affected by the path between your device and the test server. A geographically closer server often has a shorter network path, but physical distance alone does not guarantee the lowest latency or highest throughput. Peering, routing, congestion, server load and your provider's network can all affect the result. Why the browser can still report an error
