What makes a year a leap year?

The Gregorian calendar does not simply add a leap day every four years. The actual rule has three parts. First, a year divisible by 4 is normally a leap year. Second, a year divisible by 100 is normally not a leap year. Third, a year divisible by 400 is a leap year after all.

That is why 2024 is a leap year, 2100 is not, and 2000 is. The year 2024 is divisible by 4 and is not a century year. The year 2100 is divisible by both 4 and 100, but not by 400. The year 2000 is divisible by 400, which restores leap-year status.

Why leap years are necessary

A calendar year of exactly 365 days is slightly shorter than Earth's actual trip around the Sun. The tropical year is approximately 365.242 days. If every calendar year contained exactly 365 days, the calendar would slowly drift relative to the seasons.

Adding February 29 in selected years keeps the calendar much closer to the astronomical year. The Gregorian century exceptions improve the older every-four-years rule by removing some excess leap days. Over a 400-year Gregorian cycle, there are 97 leap years and 303 common years.

Why century years are different

Using only a divisible-by-4 rule would make the average calendar year 365.25 days long, which is slightly too long. The Gregorian system therefore skips leap day in most century years. Years such as 1700, 1800, 1900, and 2100 are not leap years even though they are divisible by 4.

Every fourth century is kept as a leap year because years divisible by 400 qualify. That makes 1600, 2000, and 2400 leap years and gives the Gregorian calendar an average of 365.2425 days per year.
