How to Use the Tip Calculator

Enter the bill amount

Start with the amount you want to use as the base of the calculation. In a restaurant this is often the food-and-drink subtotal before gratuity. If the receipt already includes tax and you do not want to separate it, enter the displayed amount and leave the tax field at zero. Decimal values are supported, so an amount such as 87.43 can be entered exactly.

Select the currency symbol

Choose the symbol that matches the bill. This setting changes how results are displayed and does not perform exchange-rate conversion. Percentage mathematics is the same in every currency, so travelers can simply choose the local symbol and calculate the gratuity in that currency.

Choose a common or custom tip

Quick buttons are provided for 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, and 25%. Selecting one updates the custom-tip field instantly. You can also type any non-negative percentage, including decimal values. Setting the custom value to zero removes additional gratuity entirely, which can be useful when a service charge is already included.

Add tax when needed

The tax field is optional. Enter the percentage if the bill field contains a pre-tax subtotal and you want a complete estimate. Tax is calculated from the original bill amount. If the amount you entered already includes tax, leave the tax field at zero so the same tax is not counted twice.

Account for a service charge

Some restaurants, hotels, event venues, and large-party checks include a service charge automatically. Enter that percentage separately so it appears in the breakdown. A service charge and an optional tip are not always the same thing, so read the receipt carefully before deciding whether to add more gratuity.

Tip before or after tax

By default, the tool calculates tip from the original bill amount. Enable Tip After Tax if you prefer to calculate gratuity from the subtotal plus tax. The option makes the calculation transparent and lets you match your preferred method rather than assuming one approach.

Split the bill

Use the plus and minus controls to set the number of people sharing the payment. The calculator divides the final total evenly and also shows the tip portion per person. For example, a $120 total split among four people becomes $30 each. If people owe different amounts, a dedicated bill splitter is more appropriate.

Round for convenience

Round Total Up moves the complete bill to the next whole currency unit. Round Each Person's Share Up separately rounds the per-person amount. These options can make cash payments simpler, although rounding each person's share upward can cause the combined payments to exceed the exact bill slightly.

Restaurant dining

Enter the meal subtotal, select a tip percentage, include tax if necessary, and review the gratuity and total. Groups splitting evenly can increase the number of people for an instant per-person amount.

Food delivery and takeout

Delivery orders may contain delivery fees, service fees, taxes, and an optional driver tip. Use the amount that best matches the portion you want to tip on, and use the service-charge field when you want an existing percentage-based fee shown separately.

Travel and hospitality

Tipping customs vary widely. Travelers can use the calculator for taxis, tours, hotel services, restaurant meals, or other percentage-based gratuities, while checking local customs and whether a service charge is already included.

Salons and personal services

Haircuts, nail services, spa appointments, and similar services are often tipped by percentage where gratuities are customary. Enter the service amount and desired percentage to see both gratuity and final payment quickly.

Large parties and automatic gratuity

If an automatic gratuity or service charge is already on the check, enter it in the service-charge field. You can set additional tip to zero or choose another percentage if you intentionally want to add more.

Checking mental math

Estimating 10% and doubling it is a convenient way to approximate a 20% tip. The calculator is more useful when the bill contains cents, the percentage is unusual, tax or service charges need to be separated, or several people want an exact split.
